Explore Nambour

It’s no secret that the Sunshine Coast is one of the most beautiful parts of Australia. Our stunning beaches are back-dropped by rolling mountains, and every town is sprinkled with incredible cafes and bars where you can enjoy delicious local produce and live emerging talent. To help you enjoy the best of what both Horizon Festival and the Sunshine Coast has to offer, we’ve put together a curated itinerary for one of our Festival hubs, Nambour. Grab your friends or family and set off for the day to explore your own backyard!

A Morning in Nambour

10am: Start your day with a coffee at Small Change, an espresso bar whose name comes from the idea that making small changes in your everyday life can help reduce our impact on the environment.

10:30am: Once you’re caffeinated and ready to go, wander to the Nambour Train Station where you’ll find the start of our [In]Place interactive art trail. [In]Place draws on the creative output of five visual artists who have worked in collaboration with experienced animator Helena Papageorgiou to transform their work into an interactive motion experience, supported by the Eye Jack app. Make sure you download the Eye Jack app before you head off so you can interact with the artworks! Follow the signs through the streets of Nambour to The Old Ambulance Station. If you need a second coffee for your walk, check out Husk & Honey on Queen Street.

Once you’re at The Old Ambulance Station, check out the final [In]Place artworks exhibiting inside. The Old Ambo is also hosting Our People, Our Place, a large-scale photographic projection work that showcases and celebrates the rich diversity of our region. Combining portraiture, projection and sound, Our People, Our Place tells the story of 35 people from across the Sunshine Coast.

11:30am: After your art fix, make your way back through Nambour via the vintage & retro trail, you can check out the full trail here. Be sure to also stop into BackBeat Records and browse through their epic record collection, you won’t leave empty handed.

12:30pm: Wrap up your morning with a delicious bite at Downtown Burgers, a locals favourite (and not-so-locals, we’ve been known to drive a distance for these amazing burgers!). Uniquely positioned in the heart of downtown, this locals favourite champions the people, places, sights and sounds of Nambour.

An Evening in Nambour

3pm: Start your evening in Nambour with a good vintage fix, there’s an incredible retro trail to check out – you might even find something to wear for that night!

4pm: From there, wander to the Nambour Train Station where you’ll find the start of our [In]Place interactive art trail. If you need a drink before you head off, pop into Bison Bar for one of their signature cocktails.

Once you’re at The Old Ambulance Station, check out the final [In]Place artworks exhibiting inside. The Old Ambo is also hosting Our People, Our Place, a large-scale photographic projection work that showcases and celebrates the rich diversity of our region. 5:30pm: Grab an early dinner from locals favourite, Downtown Burgers.

7pm: If you’re exploring Nambour on a weekday, head to the Majestic Cinemas & Event Centre Nambour to catch a screening of one of our Horizon Hot Docs films. Sharing untold stories from the fringes, our film program explores individual and community identity; celebrating and giving a platform to courageous change makers and activists. If you’re looking to see a show, grab a ticket to The Cold Record, being shown at The Old Ambulance Station. The Cold Record is a story of a 12 year old boy who tries to set the record for the most days leaving school sick, and in the process falls in love with the school nurse and learns to appreciate punk rock. Sit down, grab a beer and let Rude Mechs take you on an interactive storytelling performance about punk rock. But you must promise never to speak about what you witnessed or else you'll get kicked out!

9pm: Round out your evening with some live music at Bison Bar
